Description
A Note for Teachers:
This text contains a selection of themes used for the Socratic Seminar series in the junior cycle at Mater
Dei Academy, Cork. The themes are intended as a starting point rather than a conclusion for discussion.
Students should be guided to review the text and and prepare answers to the discussion questions before
the seminar in order to get the most from the session. While it may not always be possible with the
younger class groups, teachers are encouraged to act as observers of the classroom discussion rather
than moderators, and to intervene as little as possible allowing the students to lead the topic. The
teacher’s role is primarily to ensure that discussion remains centred on the text and not on peripheral
conversations. The entire seminar should last around 40 minutes although in-depth sessions can extend
longer. It is advised to begin and end each seminar with a prayer to Holy Spirit; “the Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to
you” (Jn 14:26).
This book is used in 1st and 2nd year.
This book can only be purchased by Mater Dei Education enroled families.
